GUNNISON, Colo. – Western State men’s and women’s basketball will face five Division I opponents throughout the western United States in the 2010 exhibition schedule released today by head coaches Latricia Trammell and Mike Moskowitz.
Men’s basketball opens the season Nov. 1 at Northern Colorado, who advanced to the semifinals of the Big Sky Conference tournament and to the quarterfinals of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament last season. The Golden Bears are under first year head coach BJ Hill, who was an associate coach for Northern Colorado the last two seasons. Tip off from the Butler-Hancock Pavilion is 7:05 p.m.
Women’s basketball will face a familiar coach, but a new team when the Mountaineers take on Colorado Nov. 5 at 7:05 p.m. Linda Lappe, the former head coach at Metro State, will be beginning her first season with her alma mater. The Buffaloes were 13-17 overall and 3-13 in the Big 12 Conference last season.
The Mountaineer men take on Colorado State the next night, Nov. 6, at 5:30 p.m. in Moby Arena. Western State trailed by only a point at halftime against the Rams a year ago, who went on to compete in the College Basketball Invitational tournament.
The women wrap up the exhibition weekend at Arizona Sunday afternoon in a 1 p.m. contest at the McKale Memorial Center. The Wildcats advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Pac-10 Tournament before bowing out to eventual national runner-up Stanford.
The exhibition season ends when the men travel to Boise State Nov. 13 for a 7 p.m. contest with the Broncos. Boise State was knocked out the quarterfinals of the Western Athletic Conference tournament last season. The Saturday night contest will count as a regular season contest for Boise State, but an exhibition contest for Western State due to differences in playing season regulations between Division I and Division II.
The first game of the regular season will be at home for the men against Eastern New Mexico Nov. 17, while the women will open the regular season at the Adams State Classic against Cameron Nov. 19.
