GUNNISON, Colo. – Western State College Head Women’s Basketball Coach Latricia Trammell is excited to announce the hiring of Julian Assibey as an assistant coach with the Mountaineer program. Assibey (pronounced ah-SEE-ah-bay) will move in for Chris Trammell, who resigned last month to take a position in Oklahoma.
“I’m very excited about the position,” Assibey said. “I think Coach Trammell is doing a great job and I’m really excited to help her take the team to the next level.”
Assibey comes to Western State from William Penn University in Oskaloosa, Iowa, where he was an assistant women's basketball and track coach for the Statesmen. He worked previously as an assistant women’s basketball coach at Metro State under Linda Lappe, now the head coach at Colorado, where his focus was on the guard position. He helped lead the Roadrunners to a third-place finish in the RMAC in 2008 and fifth-place finish in 2009.
Assibey also worked as a coach with the Colorado Athletic Club beginning in 2006 and overlapping his coaching years at Metro State. He worked in 2005 with the Southern California Basketball Academy and also spent a year with the Harlem Ambassadors as a show basketball player.
Assibey earned his degree in sports administration and strength and conditioning from William Penn in 2005, where he was a two-sport athlete between basketball and track and field. He was a three-year captain for the Statesmen basketball team and holds the program record for career steals. Assibey led William Penn to back-to-back conference tournament championships.
Assibey was also a three-time Midwest Collegiate Conference champion in the long jump and a triple jump champion in 2003. He qualified for the NAIA National Championships in the triple jump in 2003.
“I am very excited that Coach J is joining our women’s basketball program,” Trammell said. “He has a great passion for the game and he is familiar with the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. I knew Julian was a great fit for our program when I first met him. I look forward to working with Julian.”
