HAYS, Kan. – Junior quarterback Miles Gorham passed for 218 yards in his first collegiate start and connected on touchdown passes to Lukas Adams and Shaun Suttorp as Western State (0-1) dropped a 45-20 decision to Fort Hays State (1-0) tonight at Lewis Memorial Field.
The Mountaineers were three-of-three in the red zone, starting with Germaine Daniels' game-tying four-yard run in the first quarter. Adams recorded his first collegiate touchdown reception on a 17-yard pass from Gorham and Suttorp collected his 13th career reception on a nine-yard pass in the fourth quarter.
Curtis Prock made his first appearance since 2008 and led both teams with 10 receptions and 97 yards. Prock sat out last season with a medical redshirt. Suttorp moved closer to breaking the career reception record with five tonight. He needs 11 to tie and 12 to set the record.
Gorham finished with 21 completions to six different receivers on 32 attempts with no interceptions. He also averaged 36.2 yards per punt with one inside the 20 yardline.
Chris Price finished with a career-high eight tackles and Mike Reynolds added eight more and a quarterback hurry as the two led both teams. Johnny Pieper added a forced fumble on top of seven tackles and Adam Turmer and Patrick Atherton added quarterback hurries as well.
Neither team committed a turnover for their respective season openers. Gorham has gone 78 straight attempts without an interception dating back to the 2008 season opener at Emporia State.
