GUNNISON, Colo. – A coordinated and repeated attack allowed the Western State men’s basketball to return with the flag and claim in the win in the Second Annual Men’s Basketball/Women's Volleyball Capture the Flag competition last night. Both teams are coached by the Moskowitz’s, Mike and Katie, which provided the motive for the annual game.
The entire Western State campus south and west of Escalante Drive was in play except for the inside of buildings. The dividing line followed the sideline leading west from Savage Library near Crawford Hall, and the south edge of the main parking lot for Kelley and Escalante Hall on the east side of the library.
A major rule change for 2010 dictated that members couldn’t change clothes – a tactic used by volleyball last year. Using the advantage of the men’s basketball team not knowing the newcomers, some members changed clothes and pretended to be freshmen learning their way across campus.
The sides were reversed from last year, with volleyball claiming the north side of campus. After the first game was called off to confusion, or maybe manipulation, or the rules, the game restarted and volleyball tied their flag to a tree south of the pool.
Although it knocked several players out of the game, the men’s basketball team used a series of athletes to untie, move, and eventually clear the flag from the volleyball territory to win the game.
The win evened the series at 1-1 after volleyball claimed a disputed victory last season.
