GUNNISON, Colo. – An expanded conference schedule means a shortened non-conference schedules for the Western State men’s and women’s basketball teams. Both teams will be on the road for Thanksgiving holiday classics hosted by RMAC schools along with limited games during the opening weekend.
The men open the season at home with Eastern New Mexico Nov. 17 in the second year of a home-and-home agreement with the Greyhounds. Eastern New Mexico has been reported in the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel and the Abilene Reporter News as looking into RMAC membership, although no formal announcement by either the RMAC or Eastern New Mexico has been made.
The women will open the season in Alamosa, Colo., for the Adams State Classic. Western State opens with Lone Star Conference member Cameron Nov. 19 before following with NAIA member Northern New Mexico the next day. The Mountaineers won in their last meeting with Cameron two years ago in a 71-62 overtime win at the Texas Woman’s Classic.
The Western State men face a pair of Division II schools during its Thanksgiving classic at Mesa State, starting with Dixie State Nov. 26. The Mountaineers close out the initial nonconference portion of the schedule the next night with their first-ever meeting with Texas-Permian Basin.
The Mountaineer women close out the nonconference schedule at Metro State during the Thanksgiving weekend with first-time meetings with Simon Fraser and Nova Southeastern. Simon Fraser is a Canadian school in the process of transitioning from the NAIA to become the first international member of Division II. Nova Southeastern competes in the Sunshine State Conference.
The men will make a brief break in the conference schedule with a meeting with Wyoming. The game was originally set for Dec. 31, but discussions ongoing for a different date. The Cowboys finished eighth in the Mountain West Conference last year and went 10-21 overall.
