GUNNISON, Colo. – More than 100 student-athletes from across eight states spent six days at the highest four-year college in the nation for cross country training during the High Altitude Distance Camp held in the Gunnison Valley last week. Runners learned training, warm-up, nutrition and motivation techniques while enjoying various recreational activities in the area.
The camp featured a run up W Mountain, a 2.6-mile course with an elevation gain of nearly 1,000 feet. Keegan Vargo of Chapparral High School won the boys title while Valerie Stark of Custer County high School was the top girl to finish.
Campers also rafted down the Upper Taylor River, hiked up Mt. Crested Butte while utilizing the Western State athletic facilities for weight training and pool workouts.
