RENO, Nev. – Former Mountaineer football student-athlete Josh Hotchkiss (’01) earned his second gold medal in the “Toughest Competitor Alive” event at the Western States Police & Fire Games last Saturday. Hotchkiss is a member of the S.W.A.T. team in Arvada, Colo., and won his first gold medal in the event since 2007.
Hotchkiss competed in eight events during the day: 5K run, shot put, 100-meter dash, 100-yard swim, 20-foot rope climb, bench press, pull-ups and obstacle course. He competed in the men’s open heavyweight division and had the best bench press for all divisions with 365 pounds. The event resembles the multi-event structure in track and field, in which points are collected throughout the day and the highest total wins.
Hotchkiss was a member of the RMAC All-Century team last year. He holds the program records for career tackles (504), season tackles for loss (24 in 2000), career tackles for loss (67) and is second in career sacks with 21. He was an AFCA and D2Football.com All-American in 2001 and a Cactus Bowl participant.
Hotchkiss has earned a Medal of Distinguished Service and multiple Commendations and other awards from the Arvada Police Department. He joined the S.W.A.T. team in 2008 and holds the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office obstacle course record at 3 minutes and 47 seconds, more than a minute better than the next closest time.
