BRISTOL, Conn. - Western State 1999 alumnus Shane Carwin, who will fight for the UFC Heavyweight Title Saturday, was a featured guest on SportsCenter this morning with host Josh Elliott. Carwin is the interim titleholder and will face Brock Lesnar in pay-per-view from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Elliott brought up Carwin's wrestling and football background from Western State, where he was a three-time wrestling All-American and two-time football All-American. Elliott quoted ESPN Draft Analyst Mel Kiper, Jr., from the 1998 draft projections, that stated "because of his size, exceptional strength and physical style, he basically just splatter guards in the box."
Carwin is 12-0 in the UFC with no fight lasting longer than the first round. He won the interim title March 27 by knockout against two-time champion Frank Mir. Saturday's fight was originally scheduled for last November, but was postponed and later canceled due to a serious intestinal condition by Lesnar.
Fans can follow Saturday's fight on pay-per-view through most satellite and cable providers. Online coverage will be handled by Yahoo! Sports, UFC.com and the UFC iPhone app. Sherdog.com will also provide live blogs and quick results.
