GUNNISON, Colo. – Nearly 500 athletes and coaches from 50 teams from across the region converged on the hardwood courts at Western State and other gyms in the Valley for the basketball team camps last week. The women’s team camp invited nearly 100 athletes from June 21-23 while the men needed six courts for teams from June 24-26.
Florence High School won the women’s team camp with a 9-1 record in the second year of the Mountaineer women’s camp. Gunnison and Norwood tied for second place honors with an 8-2 record.
Broomfield High School won their second straight men’s team camp championship on a last-second shot against Torrington High School, the Wyoming 3A state champion. It was a revenge win after Torrington defeated Broomfield the day before on a similar ending. The men’s camp also featured 26 licensed officials for three days of evaluation.
The Mountaineer athletic facilities take a brief break from camps before the volleyball basic skills camp begins July 9.
