GUNNISON, Colo. - Seven Mountaineer wrestlers will depart tomorrow morning and represent No. 6 Western State in the 2010 NCAA Division II National Championships, scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Sapp Fieldhouse on the campus of Nebraska-Omaha. Practices and meetings take up the day on Thursday before the first session begins Friday morning.
Four Mountaineers are making their first career trip to the national championships, while the other three are looking to add additional All-American honors to their careers. Western State is one of 12 teams at this weekend's championships with seven or more wrestlers competing.
Kyle O'Brien (125 pounds), Jesse Cruz (141 pounds), Kyle Francis (157 pounds) and Zach Frazier (174 pounds) are each taking part in the nationals experience for the first time. Charlie Pipher (184 pounds) is making his first appearance at the national tournament since 2007 while Donovan McMahill (197 pounds) and Charlie Alexander (285 pounds) are going for the third straight season.
The first session, which involves only the opening-round matches, start at 10 a.m. MST. The second session, which is the quarterfinal round of the championship bracket and the first two rounds of the consolation bracket, begins at 5 p.m. MST.
Action begins Saturday morning at 9 a.m. MST with championship semifinals and the completion of the consolation bracket. Championship finals begin at 7 p.m. MST.
The nearest parking for fans will be in parking lots M and Q to the west of Sapp Fieldhouse and south of the library. Additional parking is available east of the Fieldhouse and Caniglia Field in Lots T, U and V in the parking garage. Ticket information is available through
