GUNNISON, Colo. - A relay team and two individuals will make up the Western State contingent at the 2010 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships that start tomorrow in the Albuquerque Convention Center. The Mountaineers are scheduled to compete in the later events during both days of the championships.
The men's distance medley relay team, which qualified with a time of nine minutes, 56.23 seconds on the same track Feb. 5. Tyler Rasmussen, Andy Crook, Jerrett Swarr and Loren Ahonen have the fifth-fastest time in program history and three of the members (Rasmussen, Swarr and Ahonen) are going for their second straight All-America title in the event.
The distance medley relay will wrap up the first day of competition Friday night with the race scheduled to start at 7:45 p.m.
The Mountaineers will send two individuals, each in the 5,000-meter run, for the Saturday events beginning at 5:35 p.m. Lauren Kleppin will be the only women's team member to compete this weekend and advanced to the national championships on an adjusted time of 16:55.12 from the Grand Valley State Big Meet Feb. 12. She has the sixth-best time in program history and collected her first RMAC 5,000-meter championship two weeks ago.
Iain Donnan, who has the 10th fastest time in the nation this season, will be one of the nine RMAC athletes among the 12 competitors in the run. Donnan finished sixth at last year's national indoor championships and collected his second conference title Feb. 27. He will start at 5:55 p.m. in the third-to-last event of the national meet.
