GUNNISON, Colo. – It’s a meeting of the top offensive rebounding teams in the conference when Western State women’s basketball (8-11, 6-5 RMAC) hosts Adams State (15-3, 9-2 RMAC) tonight in Paul Wright Gym.

Western State is leading the conference with 15.6 offensive rebounds per game, ahead of second-place Adams State’s 14.2 per game. The Grizzlies, however, lead Division II with a rebounding margin of +16.1.

Both teams are in position to qualify for the RMAC Shootout in March, and a win would help the Mountaineers separate themselves from the bottom three teams and compete to host a first-round game. The Grizzlies are three games ahead of Western State and a game behind from first-place Fort Lewis in the West Division standings.

Amber Murray won her second RMAC West Division Player of the Week after averaging 28.5 points last week. The senior scored a season-high 32 points in her last game against Western New Mexico and leads the RMAC with 10 20-point games this season. She has 770 career points as a Mountaineer and is just over 100 points from entering the top-10 scoring lists.

A win tonight would move Head Coach Latricia Trammell alone into fourth all-time in Mountaineer coaching victories. She’s currently tied with Sandee Mott, who won 35 games from 2001-05.

The Mountaineers are second in the RMAC with nearly 70 points per conference game, and will have to contend with the second-best scoring defense , who is only giving up 57 points per RMAC game. The Grizzlies have relied on their defense this season and lead the conference in rebounding defense, defensive rebound percentage and lead the nation in field goal percentage defense.

Western State is 1-1 this season against teams mentioned in the WBCA national poll after splitting with fifth-ranked Alaska-Anchorage Dec. 19-20. Adams State is receiving votes in the latest poll, just outside of being ranked among the top 25.
