LAS VEGAS – Undefeated Ultimate Fighting Championship athlete Shane Carwin will face Frank Mir for the interim UFC heavyweight championship belt March 27 at UFC 111 from Newark, N.J. It will be Carwin’s first fight in more than a year after his scheduled heavyweight title fight with Brock Lesnar was postponed because of illness.

Mir is a former UFC heavyweight champion who is 13-4 on the mixed martial arts circuit. He lost in the second round to Lesnar at UFC 100 and won his last match against Cheick Kongo Dec. 12 in the first round Dec. 12.

Carwin has won all his fights in the first round within the first two minutes and 11 seconds. Six wins have been by knockout and five by submission.

The heavyweight title will be one of two world titles on the line at UFC 111. Georges St-Pierre will look to hold his welterweight title against Dan Hardy, who is undefeated since making his UFC debut Oct. 18, 2008.

The fight will be broadcast live on Pay-Per-View. Tickets go on sale to the general public Jan. 9 through Ticketmaster.

Carwin was the 1999 national champion at Western State and a three-time All-American in wrestling. He holds program records for season falls, career falls and fastest fall. He was also a two-time All-American on the football field and earned RMAC All-Century honors on the defense last summer. Carwin is a 2004 Mountaineer Sports Hall of Fame inductee and will enter the RMAC Hall of Fame this summer.
