GUNNISON, Colo. - No. 13 Western State (6-3, 3-1 RMAC) won by a major decision and technical fall in taking the last four matches to claim a 33-6 win against Chadron State (3-7, 0-4 RMAC) tonight to close out a four-dual homestand in Paul Wright Gym. The Mountaineers extended their home winning streak to 10 duals dating back to January 2009.
After falling behind early on a decision at 174 pounds, Western State scored wins in the next four matches, two off forfeits to take a 18-3 advantage after the 125-pound match. Second-ranked Charlie Pipher missed the major decision by one point at 184 pounds in a 10-3 match against Chris Leak. No. 4 Charlie Alexander scored three points in the second period to claim a 3-2 decision at heavyweight.
The Eagles earned another decision victory after the intermission at 133 pounds before the Mountaineers scored the 15 points of the dual. Hollan Gravley moved into a 6-1 lead by the second period before claiming the 141 match 10-4 against Hagen Guzman. Caleb Lockyer earned his third major decision of the season at 149 pounds one point short of the technical fall at 22-8.
Kyle Francis was able to earn the technical fall early in the third period with a 19-3 victory after scoring the first eight points of the match. Cody Frankum wrapped up the dual with an 11-8 victory at 165 pounds against Justin Dekok.
The Mountaineers held an advantage in takedowns, 28-9, and nearfalls, 5-0. It was also the sixth victory against the Eagles in the last seven meetings.
