Biber, Towns Lead Mountaineers at #14 Mesa

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Dan Biber scored 13 and Weylan Towns added another 11 as Western State (3-14, 0-10 RMAC) held with No. 14 Mesa State (16-1, 10-0 RMAC) in an 84-64 loss tonight in Brownson Arena. Alex Hart also added solid numbers with five points, six rebounds and four assists.

After Mesa State took its first lead of the game with 16 minutes, 12 seconds left in the first half, Western State used an 8-1 run to take a five-point lead off a free throw from Mike Bogar with 11:20 remaining.  The Mountaineers held the Mavericks to no field goals for nearly six minutes near the end of the half and went up by six points twice in that span before Mesa closed the half on an 11-3 run to enter halftime with a 36-27 lead.

Hobin led the Mountaineers with seven points at halftime and brought down three rebounds along with Hart. Hart also finished with three assists at the intermission.

Western State pulled within three points with 16:15 remaining off a pair of free throws from Alex Hart before Mesa State opened a 21-point lead off a 21-3 rally ending with 11:24 on the clock. The Mountaineers put together an 8-3 run to pull within 16 points with less than five minutes remaining, but couldn’t close the gap down the stretch.

Biber reached double-digit points for the seventh time in the last eight games on five-of-12 shooting from the field. Weylan Towns recorded his 11 points on four-of-eight shooting from the field and three-of-four free-throw shooting.

Hart recorded a season-high in assists and matched his season-high for rebounds tonight. Hobin and Andrew Zehnder both finished with eight points apiece.

Up Next: The Mountaineers return home to face Western New Mexico Saturday night in an 8 p.m. contest in Paul Wright Gym. The Mustangs are third in the RMAC West Division standings with a 6-3 conference record.
