McMahill Collects 5th Fall at Grand Canyon

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Third-ranked Donovan McMahill won his 10th straight match and collected his fifth fall of the season tonight against Kevin Treftz at 197 pounds as No. 6 Western State (2-3) dropped  a 24-18 decision to Grand Canyon (5-4) tonight. Four other Mountaineers collected wins as the Antelopes collected three falls in their five wins.

Grand Canyon opened an early 9-0 lead with a fall at 125 pounds against Kyle O'Brien (8-10) and a 5-2 decision at 133 pounds against Daren Hockett (2-3) in his fifth match of the season.

The Mountaineers closed the gap to three points with a pair of decisions in the next two weight classes. Hollan Gravley improved to 13-8 on the season at 141 pounds with an 11-10 decision against Kyle Wilson and Caleb Lockyer (12-8) won back-to-back matches for the first time in more than a month in a 13-6 decision against Daniel Rubio.

The Antelopes recorded back-to-back wins in the next two matches with a 6-5 decision against Justin Keys (8-6) at 157 pounds and a fall at two minutes and one second against Cody Frankum (7-7) at 165 pounds. A decision victory by Zach Frazier (7-4) at 175 pounds against Daniel Garay brought the Mountaineers within nine points at 18-9 with three matches remaining.

Grand Canyon secured the win at 184 pounds when Ryan Becerra pinned Kyle Francis at 2:01 to increase its scored to 24-9. The Mountaineers closed the match with wins at 197 pounds and heavyweight with McMahill's pin at 1:01 and No. 2 Charlie Alexander's 5-2 decision against Richard Hernandez to improve to 17-2.
