Men Claim Mountaineer Open Title

GUNNISON, Colo. – Iain Donnan and Tyler Pennel finished first and second to lead the Western State men to the team title with 19 points in the 2009 Mountaineer Open today. Hillory Davis ran 19 minutes, 26.07 seconds to finish third overall as the Western State women claimed second.

Donnan finished with almost a 10-second advantage over Pennel in the 7.4-kilometer race. Ryan Haebe, competing unattached, beat out Andrew Graham of Adams State at the finish line by two inches to place fourth overall. Tyler Rasmussen and Sean Brown finished sixth and seventh and Loren Ahonen rounded out the scoring runners by placing ninth overall.

The Mountaineers claimed four of the top five scoring runners and displaced the No. 10 and No. 11 positions.

The Western State women placed three runners in the top sixas  Annika Haughwout and Sarah Lyle finished fifth and sixth, respectively, behind Davis. Grace Eggleston scored 10 points and Tara Richardson scored 19 to complete the scoring for the Mountaineers.

Mesa State won the women’s title with 26 points with all five scoring runners finishing among the top-10 in points in the five-kilometer race.

Assistant coach Lisa Thomas finished second overall and Lauren Kleppin and Sophie McNeely recorded top-10 finishes as unattached runners. Assistant coach Paul Michel placed third in the men's race.

Up Next: Western State will split squads next weekend between the Oklahoma State Jamboree and Colorado Rocky Mountain Shootout.

Dan picked up his second career double-double with 19 points and a career-high 12 rebounds during an 81-75 victory at Northern New Mexico Dec. 16. He went perfect at the free-throw line, six-of-six, for the fourth time this season and leads the RMAC West Division in free-throw percentage and offensive rebounds.

Katie brought down 13 rebounds, made four blocked shots and four steals in the Mountaineers' upset victory at No. 5 Alaska-Anchorage Dec. 19. The win snapped a 29-game home winning streak for Alaska-Anchorage and handed the Seawolves their first loss of the season.

Katie led Western State in rebounding the next night and scored 13 points in a loss to close out the weekend. It was her fourth game this season with double-digit points.

In RMAC statistics, Katie leads the West Division in rebounding and is second in offensive rebounds.
