COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After a fifth-place showing in the RMAC/Wells Fargo All-Competition Cup and a No. 12 finish in the Learfield Sports Division II Directors Cup competition, Western State earned another overall honor for the 2008-09 academic year with a fourth-place performance in the RMAC Sportsmanship Cup, announced yesterday by the conference office.
“I am proud of our student-athletes, coaches and fans, as they demonstrate class in a highly competitive environment, while they simultaneously compete at a high level,” said Western State Athletic Director Dr. Greg Waggoner. “Furthermore, our staff, especially assistant athletic director Megann Powell, does a fine job creating this environment at our home events.”
The Mountaineers were scored by each of the RMAC head coaches and one Student-Athlete Advisory Committee member from the sports sponsored at the conference level. Each school earned a ranking ranging from poor to excellent from each voter on four game environment factors: players, fans, staff and coaches. Western State averaged a 4.047 out of a possible five-point scale.
Colorado Christian claimed the overall title, followed by Nebraska-Kearney and Regis. Chadron State rounded out the top five finishers.
