COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Shane Carwin, Josh Hotchkiss and Bill Campbell helped Western State lead the conference in defensive selections in the RMAC All-Century Football Team. Running back Bill Rhodes increased the Mountaineer total to four to match Chadron State for a share of the conference lead in All-Century selections.
The four led the Mountaineers to eight of their conference-leading 19 RMAC championships. The quartet also combined for 12 first-team RMAC selections and nine All-America honors.
Rhodes was a member of the inaugural class of the Mountaineer Athletics Hall of Fame and entered the RMAC Hall of Fame in 2006. A three-time All-American and four-time all-conference selection from 1953-56, he led the nation with 1,200 rushing yards in 1956 on top of 12 touchdowns. By the time of his graduation, Rhodes held national records in rushing yards in a game (327), longest run (97) and career yards (4,294).
The RMAC Player of the Year in 1996, Carwin was a two-time All-American and three-time All-RMAC honoree from 1994-97 as a linebacker. He holds Western State records for season tackles (167) and is fourth in career tackles (345). Carwin was a 2004 inductee into the Mountaineer Hall of Fame and was a national wrestling champion in 1999.
Hotchkiss was a two-time RMAC Defensive Player of the Year as a linebacker from 1997-2001. He was a three-time All-RMAC selection and earned All-America honors in his senior season after capping his career with a program-record 504 tackles and 67 tackles for loss.
A Small College Football Hall of Fame Inductee, Campbell led the Mountaineers to a 26-1 RMAC record and a pair of NAIA national semifinal appearances from 1976-78. He was a three-time All-American and a 1978 Academic All-American as a defensive back. He holds program interception records with seven in 1978 and 17 during his three-year career. Campbell was a 1996 inductee into the Mountaineer Athletics Hall of Fame.
