The RMAC announced the winner of the RMAC/Wells Fargo All Sport Competition Cup. For the second time in three years, the Metropolitan State College of Denver Roadrunners have won the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference All-Sports Competition Cup. MSCD earned 858.5 points this year, eighty-five more points than second place Adams State College (773.5). Western State placed fifth with 724.5 points.
“We are proud to have finished very respectfully in the RMAC/Wells Fargo All-Sports Competition Cup” said Greg Waggoner, WSC Athletic Director. “ This is a testament to the numerous high quality coaches and student-athletes we are fortunate to have that are highly dedicated to their craft and to Western State College. The RMAC hi-light for this past year was the championship won by our wrestling team. However, all of our teams, coaches, student-athletes and support staff contributed and were a part of making this happen. Nothing worthwhile ever happens in isolation and we are also fortunate to have a supportive administration, especially from President Helman. Additionally, our community, boosters, fans, corporate partners, donors, alumni, faculty, student body and other supportive departments on campus are the best in the nation!”
WSC is also one of only two NCAA Division II Institutions that have placed in the Top 25 every year for the past 14 years in the Director’s Cup Competition. Final results of that competition for this year will be announced in June. At the conclusion of the winter sports season WSC was in seventh place.
The RMAC All-Sports Competition Cup is awarded to the institution which accumulates the most points over the year based on its teams' outcome in the RMAC's four core sports, along with six wild card sports. The four core sports are football or men's soccer, men's basketball, women's basketball and volleyball, while the six wild card sports consist of three men's sports and three women's sports, which are designated by that institutions' best finish in those 15 Olympic sports (20 total RMAC sports). Total RMAC All-Sports Competition Cup points are calculated based on how the teams finish in the RMAC regular season standings. In the scenario where teams do have regular season standings, RMAC championship results are used.
This year featured three new changes to the RMAC All-Sports Competition Cup calculations: 1) regular season standings were used instead of RMAC tournament standings; 2) the point system was revised; and 3) six wild card sports were used (three men’s and three women’s) instead of four wild card sports.
The RMAC All-Sports Competition Cup will be presented during the 2009 RMAC Centennial Celebration on Saturday, July 11.
