GUNNISON, Colo. – Western State College Head Football Coach Pat Stewart is pleased to announce the hiring of Jas Bains as the Mountaineers’ Defensive Coordinator. Bains spent the last five seasons at Chadron State College coaching the secondary and special teams.

“I’m excited about the opportunity and the tremendous challenge ahead,” Bains said. “I’m looking forward to the upcoming spring and helping this program get to where they want to be and excel.”

Bains was part of a defense last season that led the RMAC in total defense, passing defense and opponent first downs. As special teams coordinator, he coached a punter and kicker to All-American honors. In five seasons, his special teams blocked 30 kicks, including eight in 2009.

A 2004 graduate of Fresno State, Bains was a defensive back and special teams player who helped lead the Bulldogs to three bowl victories against Georgia Tech, UCLA and Virginia. He started his collegiate playing career at Willamette University in Salem, Ore., where he started as a safety as a true freshman.

Bains is often a featured speaker at conventions, workshops and clinics on the role of defense and special teams. He is also a talented and respected recruiter in the state of California.

“We are extremely excited to hire a man with the character, charisma and leadership skills of Jas Bains,” Stewart said. “He is an exceptionally hard-working coach and very knowledgeable in our style of defense. He comes from one of the best football programs in Division II and will be a great fit with our players and coaches. He will do a phenomenal job in the role of defensive coordinator at Western State.”

Bains will begin his official duties in January. He replaces Brenton Illum, who accepted the head coaching position at Evangel University in Springfield, Mo.
