AURORA, Colo. – A 1959 Western State College alumnus who coached Glenwood Springs to state football championships in 1978 and 1980 is one of seven inductees for the Colorado High School Activities Association 21st Hall of Fame Class. Don Miller coached the Demons for 31 seasons and compiled a 204-174-4 career record in 33 seasons as a head coach.
Miller was a member of the Mountaineer football team from 1954-58. He was a part of the 1954 football team that won the school’s first RMAC championship, in any sport, and was later inducted into the Mountaineer Sports Hall of Fame in 2003. Miller was second in the RMAC in 1957 in rushing, behind teammate Bill Schmalz, with 643 yards on 85 carries.
Miller went on to coach Glenwood Springs to 17 state playoff appearances and two state championships. He is No. 10 on the all-time coaching wins records in Colorado high school history. His 33 seasons ranks third among head coaching tenures in Colorado, and his 31 seasons at Glenwood Springs is also the third-longest tenure at a single school.
