WAYNE, Neb. - Eight Western State College cross country runners earned all-region honors as the Mountaineers finished second in both the men's and women's NCAA Central Regional races today in Wayne, Neb. The finish qualifies the Mountaineers for the NCAA National Championships in two weeks in Evansville, Ind.

Tyler Pennel led the men with a fourth-place finish in the 10-kilometer run as all five of the men's scoring runners earned all-region accolades. Pennel clocked 31 minutes, 12 seconds, ahead of sixth-place Iain Donnan. Loren Ahonen finished eighth overall in 31:42.6.

David Flynn and Sean Brown rounded out the all-region runners with a No. 14 and No. 15 finish, respectively. The top 15 runners earn all-region status.

The top four men's teams were from the RMAC, led by Adams State. Colorado School of Mines finished third and Metro State finished fourth.

Sarah Lyle and Hillory Davis both finished in the top 10 of the overall results, with Lyle leading the two with 22:25.5 in the six-kilometer course. Cassandra Ortiz also earned all-region honors with a No. 15 finish.

Annika Haughwout and Sophiy McNeely provided the final two scoring runners for the Mountaineers, who narrowly beat out third-place Augustana by three-points. Adams State and Metro State also finished within the top five of the team results and will join Western State at the national championships.
