Seven men finished today's 7.1-kilometer course together with 36 minutes and 38 seconds while Lauren Kleppin, Tara Richadson and Sarah Lyle led the women with 27:38 as the Western State cross country teams started the season this morning with the annual Time Trials.

The final preseason event of the fall season takes place tomorrow when the nationally-ranked Western State cross country teams hold the annual Time Trials. Races begin at 9 a.m. at Tomichi Village east of Gunnison and will involve laps on the roads in the area. The Mountaineers return a combined six All-Americans for 2010.

Three-time All-American Tyler Pennel is the RMAC Preseason Runner of the Year as both Western State cross country teams were picked second in the conference preseason coaches’ poll released this afternoon. All-American Hillory Davis, Sarah Lyle and Lauren Kleppin earned a spot on the women’s preseason team.

A day after running more than 13 miles up Pikes Peak, Tim Parr placed seventh overall in the Pikes Peak Marathon this morning. He finished with a time of 4 hours, 13 minutes and 27 seconds and was the first to finish among those who competed in both the Marathon and Ascent this weekend.

Duncan Callahan, a 2005 Western State graduate, won the Leadville Trail 100-Mile Run yesterday by more than 40 minutes with a time of 17 hours, 43 minutes and 24.8 seconds. It’s his second Leadville 100 title after winning the race two years ago. Callahan was a Nordic skier for the Mountaineers from 2002-05.

Tim Parr, a 2005 Western State alumnus, finished third in his age group and No. 37 overall in the 55th running of the Pikes Peak Ascent this morning. He finished the run in 2 hours, 45 minutes and 2 seconds. He is among the handful of runners who are also scheduled to compete tomorrow in the Pikes Peak Marathon.

Distance enthusiasts are invited to compete in the annual MountainAir Marathon Sept. 19. The full marathon follows Highway 135 from Crested Butte to Gunnison, ending at Mountaineer Bowl, while the half marathon starts and finishes in the Bowl. The event benefits the Western State Track and Field teams.
