Don Meyer, a former Western State assistant men’s basketball coach from 1968-70 will have his name associated with the likes of John Wooden, Henry Iba, Red Auerbach and Pat Summitt when he receives the John W. Bunn Lifetime Achievement Award from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Aug. 12.

Nearly 500 athletes and coaches from 50 teams from across the region converged on the hardwood courts at Western State and other gyms in the Valley for the basketball team camps last week. The women’s team camp invited nearly 100 athletes from June 21-23 while the men needed six courts for teams from June 24-26.

Western State alumnus and former Mountaineer men’s basketball assistant coach Dana Altman (’81) continues to fill out his coaching staff after becoming the head men’s basketball coach at Oregon in April. Altman was an assistant coach at Western State from 1980-82 and put together 13 consecutive postseason appearances at Creighton.

Von Washington, principal at Kalamazoo Central High School and a 1990 Western State College graduate who played on the men’s basketball team, introduced President Barack Obama during the president’s commencement address last night. The school was chosen as the winner of the 2010 Race to the Top High School Commencement Challenge.

A courageous act which saved the lives of four people is the inspiration for the newest scholarship for Western State students. An anonymous donor provided $1,000 for the Champion Citizenship Scholarship, named in honor of Joaquin Vaughan who saved the four individuals. Martin Graham will receive the first scholarship.

Western State College opens the next men’s and women’s basketball conference season in Nebraska in the 2010-11 RMAC schedule released today by the Mountaineers. The new schedule features 11 home conference games as the RMAC moves from a 19-game to 22-game schedule in the upcoming season.

A 2001 Western State graduate who led the RMAC in three-point shooting was named the next head men’s basketball coach at Black Hills State Monday. Bradd Schafer will take over for Paul Sather, who will take over for another coach with Western State ties, Don Meyer, at Northern State.
