After a fifth-place showing in the RMAC/Wells Fargo All-Competition Cup and a No. 12 finish in the Learfield Sports Division II Directors Cup competition, Western State earned another overall honor for the 2008-09 academic year with a fourth-place performance in the RMAC Sportsmanship Cup, announced yesterday by the conference office.

Coach Ollie Woods

Oliver “Ollie” Woods, the coach behind eight RMAC men’s golf championships at Western State, was named the conference all-time coach in the All-Century Team released by the conference office last month. Woods spent 26 years at Western State in a variety of coaching and teaching positions and spent 20 as head men’s golf coach.

Shane Carwin, Josh Hotchkiss and Bill Campbell helped Western State lead the conference in defensive selections in the RMAC All-Century Football Team. Running back Bill Rhodes increased the Mountaineer total to four to match Chadron State for a share of the conference lead in All-Century selections.

The National Association for Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) recently announced the results of the 2008-09 Learfield Sports Directors Cup Competition for the NCAA Division II.  Western State College placed 12th out of nearly 300 eligible colleges and universities for the 2008-09 year of competition.

The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) is recognizing Honor Student-Athletes for the 2008-09 school year. Western State College honorees are Cross Country/Track and Field Athletes junior Loren Ahonen and junior Julianne Payton. Loren is a Political Science and Environmental Studies major with a 3.85 GPA and Julianne is a Biology major with a 3.70 GPA.

Western State Track and Field and Cross Country have been dominant in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference for decades.  The RMAC has honored Western State College by naming 8 athletes to the RMAC All Century Track and Field Team.

The RMAC announced the winner of the RMAC/Wells Fargo All Sport Competition Cup.  For the second time in three years, the Metropolitan State College of Denver Roadrunners have won the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference All-Sports Competition Cup. MSCD earned 858.5 points this year, eighty-five more points than second place Adams State College (773.5).  Western State placed fifth with 724.5 points.
