Every year, Western State Athletics and Miller Brewing Company/Colorado Beverage Distributing award the Champion Leadership and Responsibility Scholarship.
Both Western State College and Colorado Beverage/Miller Brewing Company are committed to developing and recognizing championship individuals that are outstanding athletes, outstanding students and leaders among their peers that demonstrate responsibility in all dimensions.
The 2007-08 scholarship winner is senior football player Jordan Gage.
“We believe Jordan will represent this scholarship in excellent fashion,” Western State Athletic Director Greg Waggoner said. “He is an outstanding young man and represents all what Mountaineer athletics is about. We also appreciate the continued support of colorado beverage and miller brewing company as they continue to support this worthy endeavor.”
Gage is a starting defensive back for the Western State football team and was recently named team captain for the second year. Off the field, Gage is involved in many clubs and activities on the Western State campus.
The Orcas Island, Wash., native has a 3.51 GPA in Exercise and Sport Science. He plans on becoming a Physical Education teacher after graduation and also going on and earning a Master’s Degree in Education.
Since coming to Western as a freshman, Gage has been involved in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Student Athlete Advisory Committee and Campus Crusade. Last year Gage was also involved in Amigos, the multi-cultural club on the Western State campus. Gage is also a member of the Kappa Delta Pi National Honor Society.
Through his extracurricular activities, Gage has been involved in highway clean-up, helping repair and paint a church, serving food to the homeless and helping build houses. He is also certified in Safe Alcohol Management.
As a football player, Gage will become a three-year starter this Fall and last year was named All-RMAC Honorable Mention. Twice Gage has been named to the All-RMAC Academic team.
“I believe Jordan’s success in the classroom and on the playing field is due to the priorities he has established for his life,” WSC Head Football Coach Pat Stewart said. “He is a kind, caring and responsible person who is respected everywhere on campus.”
The inaugural recipient in 2006 was Western State volleyball player Melissa Tucker.
